"When Diamanda Galas released her debut album, ‘Litanies of Satan’, which, in my humble opinion, stands as one of the darkest albums recorded yet, her painful, horrific cries for the dark lord are suddenly answered by the devil who agrees and come to have mercy on her misery. As she chants the old poem by Baudelaire, the answer comes in the form of an extremely low and unearthly voice. Like her invocation, Troy Schafer’s conjuring of Anubis is answered as well by a deep, low pitched and unsettling speech. ‘Anubis come in’ invites the ancient god in, and halfway through this recording, it seems like Schafer is being answered by his guest, much like Galas was.
Now don’t get me wrong, unlike the hostile, dark album by Galas, Schafer presents a wholly different approach, which suggests other directions. ‘Anubis come in’ opens with eerie melodies of slightly detuned strings and nerve breaking squeaks that are forming together a memorable gateway to the thirty minutes long ceremony that Schafer is conducting. Vague chanting and energetic violins add a more spiritual dimension to the entire recording, which also includes many different layers of sounds that add up together to a very detailed picture with numerous high contrasts.
One of these contrasts is the collision between what sounds like computer based sounds and what sounds like acoustic instruments. On different points of the album, Schafer races the listeners’ heart beats with intensifying electronic shrieks, while the acoustic music, unsettling enough without any electronic assistance, is marching on. It seems like this invocation for the entrance of Anubis is using this method in order to provoke the body into a meditative catharsis, as if for channeling the ancient god. At the peak of this process, halfway through “Death Spirit of all”, a sudden burst of insane human shrieks suggests about a successful bonding of Schafer with the spirit, and also about the approaching end of the album, almost as if Schafer is declaring - The ceremony is over!.
Like other releases and projects under his spell, “Anubis come in” is a charming stream of esoteric music that promises an intense effect on the listeners. From his shamanic sleeve, Troy Schafer sends forth two hypnotizing tracks of similar time length, one for blessing and one for death. The fact that this mini album was released by Earjerk on a cassette serves a wonderful role for Schafer, who, with the help of this analogue medium, creates an endless tape loop which produce the blessing song, only to turn to the other side of the cassette and run over that blessing with the death spirit of all. When it is done, the album begins again with another blessing, only to reverse direction and cast death again. This could not have been achieved on CD, and perhaps, in the end, the intention for calling Anubis is to deliver balance, and to even things up by showing positive waves being nulled by negative waves, and vice versa. Maybe that is where true magic lies."

"There are experimental recordings and then there are experimental recordings. Recordings that make you add another category to your blog instead of just using an adjective. Pretty frequently in reviewing releases that span from ambient to post-rock I talk about the sense of narrative structure that is defined or implied by what the music is doing. In this case, it’s a literal thing, this is a story. In fact to quote the release page:
Here Troy twists an audio tale of possession, release and the healing Light. Intense vibes all around.
To which I will add “yeah, pretty much.” In terms of describing the sound here, it’s almost post-music. There is music, but it’s secondary to whatever sounds are needed to tell the story. The B side of this tape is really harrowing; the possession part of the story is intense. The A side, where I was hearing the release and healing going on is a less so, and Troy lets some small rays of beauty peak through. Still it’s got an overall uncanny vibe. This is a challenging release. I have said that before, but this is more challenging than the last time I said something was challenging. Head over to Troy’s Soundcloud page and have a listen.
